Watching the Golden Globes last night reminded me how important stories are, and that it doesn’t have to be a huge, dramatic story to be meaningful. One of the winning directors implored producers not to neglect the small stories of ordinary people. It’s a good reminder to writers too. I’ve heard so often from writers, especially of memoir, “who really cares about my little life?” If you think of many of the books that have meant something to you over the years, I believe you will find that it is not always the larger than life story that you remember. It’s the person who shares an innermost struggle, or discovers an inner strength, or overcomes an obstacle perhaps no one else sees. The small moments of insight help us understand how humans make their way in the world. How we stand against the wind even as it threatens to topple us. To my writer friends, tell your story. It matters.
